Evolution of newborn screening in India and the way forward

Newborn screening (NBS) has proven to be a successful program in many developed countries. In India, the benefits of Dried Blood Spot screening are being recognized and slowly gaining traction. The private health-care sector in urban areas offers screening options for parents who request and are willing to pay for them. In some states, the public health-care sector has initiated screening programs based on the results of pilot programs that have later been translated into public health policy. Chandigarh, Goa, and Kerala are currently serving as models for programs in the public sector. Recently, the Unique Methods of Management and Treatment of Inherited Disorders (UMMID) and National Inherited Diseases Administration (NIDAN) Kendras by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and the Neonatal Early Evaluation Vision (NEEV) mission by the Delhi government have emerged as newer public sector initiatives in the field.
